The details
What happens when you convert a PDF to text
The portable document format. Fixed layout, universal, and the reason everyone can open the file you send them. The text layer of each page is read out in reading order and stitched together, dropping the layout but keeping the words. The result is a the format the web is built on. a document that a browser knows how to lay out, produced entirely inside your browser.
What survives
- The text, in the order the page presents it
- Paragraph breaks, most of the time
What changes
- All formatting — fonts, sizes, columns, tables and images are gone
- Text drawn as vector outlines rather than as characters cannot be read
Where it goes wrong
- A scanned PDF has no text layer, so the result is empty — it needs OCR
- Tables usually come out as rows of text with no column alignment
- Reading order can be wrong on multi-column pages
Why anyone would do this
Plain text is the only format you can search, diff and feed to another program.
About the format
The portable document format.
A tree of objects describing pages, fonts, images and scripts, with a cross-reference table and a file trailer. Text and vector graphics are stored separately from the page layout.
- Where it is good
- Looks identical on every operating system and every device
- Holds text, images, vector art, forms, signatures and 3D
- Can be locked, compressed, tagged for accessibility and archived as PDF/A
- Where it falls short
- Not really editable — you change the source document, not the PDF
- Fonts and complex layouts can shift when converted back to an office format
- A file with lots of scans can be enormous
- You will find it on
- Everyone, everywhere, for everything
The thing people miss
PDF was invented as a screen format, not a print format — which is why the page sizes are in points, not millimetres.
About the target
The format the web is built on.
A tree of elements and attributes, usually with CSS for styling and JavaScript for behaviour. The browser builds the page from it at request time.
- Reflows to any screen size on its own
- Semantic markup makes a document readable by a screen reader
- Links, images and forms are all part of the format

Questions
PDF conversion questions
What actually happens to my PDF file when I convert it to HTML?
The text layer of each page is read out in reading order and stitched together, dropping the layout but keeping the words. So the PDF file is unpacked, the content is laid out, and the result is written out as HTML. The text, in the order the page presents it survives unchanged.
Will converting PDF to HTML reduce the quality?
Partly. Some formatting is approximated because the two formats describe layout differently. The text itself is never re-typed, so no words are lost.
Is my PDF file uploaded to a server?
No. This PDF to HTML conversion runs as JavaScript inside your browser tab. The file is read from your device and the result is written back to your device, so there is no upload step, no file-size limit and no copy of your PDF file on any server.
Do I need an account or will there be a watermark?
Neither. There is no sign-up step, no email capture and no watermark on the output. The only limits are the ones your own device imposes.
What is the most common mistake people make when converting PDF to HTML?
A scanned PDF has no text layer, so the result is empty — it needs OCR
Why would somebody convert PDF to HTML at all?
Plain text is the only format you can search, diff and feed to another program. In short: sending a document that must not change on the way
Something most people do not know about PDF?
PDF was invented as a screen format, not a print format — which is why the page sizes are in points, not millimetres.
