PPT to PPTX is on the release list
The deck is opened and re-saved in the target format, mapping each slide and its layouts onto the target's own structure. That needs a full document rendering engine, so it will run on our servers rather than in your browser. It is next in the queue and it will be free.
Do it now, on your device
No PPT conversion runs on-device yet — but these do
We would rather point you at something that works than at a queue. These conversions run entirely inside your browser right now — no upload, no account, no watermark.
The details
What happens when you convert between presentation formats
The original binary PowerPoint, from before 2007. The deck is opened and re-saved in the target format, mapping each slide and its layouts onto the target's own structure. The result is a powerpoint's modern presentation format. a stack of slides, each one a page of shapes, produced on our conversion servers.
What survives
- The slides, their order and their content
- Images, text, charts and the master layout
What changes
- Animations and transitions that the target format does not support
- Some SmartArt graphics, which become ordinary images
Where it goes wrong
- A different slide aspect ratio will letterbox or crop the content
- Video links often break, because the target format handles media differently
Why anyone would do this
A deck built on one platform usually has to be shown on another.
About the format
The original binary PowerPoint, from before 2007.
A binary compound file holding a record stream of slides, each with its own shapes, text and formatting.
- Where it is good
- Opens in every version of PowerPoint ever shipped
- The only format some very old presentation tools can read
- Occasionally the only way to recover a badly damaged deck
- Where it falls short
- No modern transitions, SmartArt or video
- Fixed slide formats that do not adapt
- Larger than PPTX and increasingly unsupported
- You will find it on
- Legacy systems, old corporate archives
The thing people miss
A .ppt from 2003 that will not open in modern PowerPoint can usually be rescued by renaming it to .pptx and letting PowerPoint repair it.
About the target
PowerPoint's modern presentation format.
A ZIP archive of XML slide parts, one folder per slide, plus a master layout, theme, media and the relationships that connect them.
- Holds slides, animations, charts, video and speaker notes
- Opens in PowerPoint, Keynote, Google Slides and LibreOffice
- The de facto language of presentations

Questions
PPT to PowerPoint questions
What actually happens to my PPT file when I convert it to PPTX?
The deck is opened and re-saved in the target format, mapping each slide and its layouts onto the target's own structure. So the PPT file is unpacked, the content is laid out, and the result is written out as PPTX. The slides, their order and their content survives unchanged.
Will converting PPT to PPTX reduce the quality?
Partly. Some formatting is approximated because the two formats describe layout differently. The text itself is never re-typed, so no words are lost.
Is my PPT file uploaded to a server?
This particular conversion needs a full document rendering engine, so it is processed on our servers. Your PPT file is deleted automatically within an hour of the download being ready, and it is never opened or reviewed by a person.
Do I need an account or will there be a watermark?
Neither. There is no sign-up step, no email capture and no watermark on the output. The only limits are the ones your own device imposes.
What is the most common mistake people make when converting PPT to PPTX?
A different slide aspect ratio will letterbox or crop the content
Why would somebody convert PPT to PPTX at all?
A deck built on one platform usually has to be shown on another. In short: opening a deck from an old archive
Something most people do not know about PPT?
A .ppt from 2003 that will not open in modern PowerPoint can usually be rescued by renaming it to .pptx and letting PowerPoint repair it.
Is this the same as converting PPT to PowerPoint?
The old .ppt format and the modern .pptx format are both PowerPoint. This tool handles the .pptx file. Either way the conversion runs on our conversion servers, and there is no watermark on the result.
